What we do

We are a consultancy, specialising in Employment and HR Law, and are based near Stockport in the Greater Manchester area. We are here to help employers by guiding them through this ever-changing field. We use our expertise to provide straightforward, pragmatic advice and solutions that enable employers to achieve their business objectives, whilst ensuring they keep within legal guidelines.

Gig Economy cases

The Court of Appeal's decision in Pimlico Plumbers v Smith is a key authority in the line of recent "gig economy" Tribunal cases (including cases against Uber taxis and Citysprint couriers) in finding that certain individuals descibed as "self-employed" are in fact entitled to some workers' rights.

Mr Smith's contract described him as self-employed and suggested he ran his own business: choosing when to work, what jobs to take and providing his own tools. However, he wore Pimlico's uniform and used their van. The Court of Appeal agreed with the Tribunal that, looking at the arrangement as a whole, he was an integral part of Pimlico's operations and while there was no employment relationship, Mr Smith was a "worker" undertaking to do or perform personally work or services for another party to the contract and so he could claim disablility discrimination.
